Genesis Dodo/Lurker Live at the Spectrum - 11-26-1983

0:06 SPEAKER_00: Hey everybody, welcome back to the concert room. Inside the Philly Concert Experience. I'm your host, Bob Hill. The concert room is a podcast session dedicated to all the great performances and performers who played on the stage at the legendary Philadelphia Spectrum Arena. The Spectrum held numerous events and concerts over its 40 plus years of existence, earning the nickname America Showplace. The Spectrum was a special place for music fans and bands. Um this is going to be a really nice two-part uh show, I think we're going to do, um, because it's a pretty big subject and it's one of my favorite bands, and that's Genesis.

0:49 SPEAKER_00: Uh I previously saw Genesis for the first time on the uh 81 Abicab tour, which is probably still in my top ten of concerts of all time that I've seen um by any man. Uh it was really truly an experience. Um, so uh I think we're going to I'm gonna do part one and part two. This will be part one. And um it's uh a little bit later. This is uh Genesis. They played the Spectrum three nights, November twenty-fifth, twenty-sixth, and twenty-seventh. Uh on the uh nineteen eighty-three tour. Okay. Um, with their um supporting the album uh Genesis, which was released um a month prior to the shows of the spectrum.

1:35 SPEAKER_00: It was uh released on October 3rd, 1983. Um so as far as this tour is concerned, uh I did see the Abacab tour in eighty-one and I saw this tour in eighty-three. I was there on the uh twenty-fifth. Pretty cool. I I'm not sure if you guys ever did this, but uh, you know, we would buy concert t-shirts, uh in the parking lot, the bootleg ones, because I think inside they were a little bit too expensive. And when I say expensive, they were like twenty twenty-five dollars, which was a lot of money back then, considering a ticket.

2:14 SPEAKER_00: Eleven bucks. Um definitely changed. So we would uh we would buy the bootleg uh concert shirts out in the park a lot. And one of the cool things was, uh especially when there was a concert during the week, you'd go off for school the next day wearing the concert shirt, and everybody knew where you were the night before. Um which was pretty cool, and then you can see other people's friends or schoolmates walking around in the hallways or in class, you know, with the same concert shirt on and you had a lot in common.

2:50 SPEAKER_00: I remember a lot of the kids, my schoolmates wearing Genesis concert shirts uh the week after. This was around Thanksgiving, as I said, night uh November twenty-fifth, twenty six, twenty-seven. So when we got back to school the following week from uh Thanksgiving vacation, um I we saw I saw a lot of kids in the hallways and in classes wearing Genesis uh concert shirt, uh with the different dates on there. And um, of course I was wearing mine for the 25th. And uh, you know, as usual with uh Genesis, it was just a killer light show.

3:30 SPEAKER_00: Um just like with the Abicab tour, um it was just all coordinated with the music, so you really got a great experience. Uh it wasn't just uh a band on the stage uh you know, presenting their music, uh but the whole experience with the lights, coordinated with the music. Um, so it was really just uh a great experience. Uh I hope you were able to see Genesis back in the day. Um regarded uh even the old re iteration, you know, with uh Peter Gabriel. Um it was just uh it's just one of my favorite bands to see live.

4:08 SPEAKER_00: Uh as far as Genesis, um in Philadelphia, uh Philadelphia loved them. And I think we just loved prog music. We loved Yes, we love Genesis. We loved uh Mr. Lincoln Palmer, um, but we just always supported great proggy music in uh in Philadelphia. Um, so as far as Philadelphia, Genesis played uh Philadelphia uh many times. I think about six dates of the spectrum, starting in nineteen seventy-seven. Uh but again, most dates were multiple nights, like this tour here in eighty-three. So when I say they played six dates, um, you know, you can almost double and triple that.

4:52 SPEAKER_00: But as I said, this nineteen eighty-three uh was a three night nineteen eighty-three tour was a three-night stand of Thanksgiving uh break, and it was November twenty-fifth, twenty six, twenty-seventh. Um so before the uh Spectrum shows, um Genesis obviously played with Peter Gabriel. I think they played Philadelphia uh twice, once at the old Philadelphia Civic Center, which uh is uh the place where the Sixers played. Um and in the early uh they played there in the early 70s. And then in the mid-70s at the uh Tower Theater, and I mentioned the Tower Theater before.

5:36 SPEAKER_00: And uh as I mentioned, Genesis would set up shop for multiple two and three night stays at the spectrum. So I we're gonna play two from the November twenty-sixth show. Uh, but I'm gonna split it up in two podcasts. Um so this will be part one, and we'll we're gonna do the uh opener because it's just so great, and you really get a feel for you know, they really set the pace and uh the they set the mood with uh Jodo Larker, which uh is the opener on this night, November twenty-sixth, actually, though the whole tour that lets Roy didn't change.

6:14 SPEAKER_00: And then we're gonna do part two and I'll do a a different song, it's one of my favorites. Um that'll be a shorter podcast because I'm gonna talk about Roy to talk so much. But um the cool thing about Genesis if you saw them in concert you would you know, you you would notice this and and it was just very unique. Uh but Phil Collins would sing uh you know what front. And then uh during certain songs he would uh hop back on his drum kit to play with uh touring uh drummer Chester Thompson. He was a longtime touring drummer, great, great drummer.

6:51 SPEAKER_00: Um so that was just you know, a great experience also. Um sometimes he would sing behind his kit, but a lot of times he would be up front and then he would just run back and just play along. Fabulous as far as that's concerned. Hopefully you saw Jennifer back in the day, you know exactly what I'm talking about as far as this iteration of the band with these three. Uh so let's get to it.

14:37 SPEAKER_00: So you get a really good great idea of uh how great Genesis uh sounded. I think that's a perfect song for them uh at this time, um, and they're sets to open. And uh just wonderful concert. One of my favorites was uh singing Genesis. And um so I think shortly after this tour in '83, um they were doing solo shows or solo um albums, and Phil was uh either getting popular or he was just uh exploding as far as a solo artist. So um but it's great that we have these recordings as um a gr a great reminder and a great um archive um you know, so we can listen and go back and and relive these these great memories.
